Natural and home-made body scrubs for different skin types

Almost all of us, one or the other day, get skin-related issues because of various reasons and one of the common reasons is the polluted environment around us. It is a tedious job and a serious concern for many of us to maintain a healthy and glowing skin in this stressful and cluttered lifestyle. 

Skin experts usually suggest to scrub or massage the skin with natural exfoliants that remove dead skin cells and rejuvenate the layers of skin. Homemade body scrubs prepared with natural ingredients are chemical-free and a better and affordable choice in comparison to chemical-loaded ready-to-use market products. But it is important to understand your skin type to choose a body scrub that is suitable for your skin. Below we have listed some easy ways to prepare homemade body scrubs using natural ingredients that you can use without any hesitation as you know what they are made of.

1. Chickpea or gram flour scrub

Chickpea or gram flour is one of the widely used ingredients in Indian remedies for healthy and glowing skin.  This scrub helps to reduce dark spots, regenerate skin cells, and protect the skin from sun damages. It is suitable for all types of skin.

Ingredients- 

  • Chickpea flour- 1 cup
  • Turmeric- 2 tsp
  • Yogurt/curd- ½ cup (Can also use apple cider vinegar)
  • Rosewater- As required to maintain consistency
  • Tea tree oil- 7-8 drops
  • Vitamin E- 1 capsule or 2-3 drops (optional)

How to use- Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and make wet thick paste. Massage the paste on your skin with a soft hand in a circular manner. Wash with lukewarm water.

2. Tomato scrub 

Tomato has anti-aging properties which is also good for external exfoliation. This scrub helps to cleanse or moisturize the skin, even out the skin tone, remove dead skin cells, dark spots, sun damages and also to treat pimples. Mostly tomato scrubs are good for all skin types but be more cautious as some people may feel irritation, itching, or rashes while or after applying it. In this condition, immediately wash it off with regular water and apply moisturizer.  

Ingredients-

  • Tomato puree- 1 cup (properly mashed or blended) 
  • Blended oats- 1-2 tbsp (can also use granulated sugar)
  • Turmeric- 2 tsp
  • Rosewater- As required
  • Any essential oil- 1tbsp (like- olive oil, lavender oil, organic jojoba oil, rose oil, almond oil, jasmine oil, coconut oil)

How to use- In a bowl, combine all the ingredients to prepare spreadable consistency scrub. Now massage gently with the scrub all over the skin and wash it off using regular or lukewarm water.

3. Cinnamon sugar scrub

This scrub works as a natural exfoliator that helps you to remove dead skin cells as well as treat acne and tanned skin. It may reduce signs of aging and is good to use for all skin types. If you have rough or dry skin, it gives you soft and supple skin after the use.

Ingredients-

  • Ground cinnamon- 1 tbsp
  • Granulated brown sugar- 1 cup (or granulated white sugar)
  • Coconut oil or olive oil- 6-8 tbsp (melted)

How to use- Mix all the ingredients in a bowl, scrub on your skin gently for a few minutes and wash with lukewarm water.

4. Fruit scrub

This scrub is extremely healthy for skin. It helps to remove dead skin cells, reduces the acne scars, dark spots, and also improves the skin texture.  

Ingredients-

  • Papaya puree- 1 cup
  • Zest of orange or lemon powder- 1 medium-size orange or lemon
  • Whole egg- 1 
  • Grinded oatmeal- 2-3 tbsp
  • Essential oil- few drops (tea tree oil, lavender oil, orange essential oil, olive oil, almond oil)

How to use- Combine all the ingredients in a bowl with the help of a spoon. Rub this scrub all over the skin for a few minutes. Rinse it thoroughly.

5. Coffee sugar scrub

This simple and natural scrub is good to rejuvenate all types of skin, as they contain antioxidants which exfoliate your skin and help in preventing early signs of aging. Applying this coffee scrub regularly at least once a week gives instant glowing, spotless, and wrinkle-free skin.

 Ingredients-

  • Ground coffee- 1 cup
  • Coconut oil- 3-4 tbsp
  • Honey or fine granulated sugar- 3-4 tbsp
  • Essential oil- 3-5 drops (lavender oil, organic jojoba oil, rose oil, almond oil, tea tree oil, jasmine oil)

How to use- Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and gently rub or massage all over the skin in a circular motion for few minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water.

6. Aloe vera-turmeric scrub

This super-natural scrub contains anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties which help you fight pimples, dark spots, blackheads, wrinkles, and early aging signs. 

 Ingredients-

  • Granulated sugar- 1 cup
  • Turmeric- 2 tsp
  • Aloe vera gel- ½ cup
  • Vitamin E- 3-5 drops
  • Oil- 1 tbsp (coconut oil, olive oil, rice bran oil, almond oil) (optional)

How to use- Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and keep it aside for 5 minutes to set. Now apply scrub all over the skin and rub in a circular motion. Wash with little warm or fresh regular water.

7. Brown sugar lemon scrub

In this scrub, the brown sugar granules exfoliate the dead skin cells that stay on the top layer of the skin. Using this scrub regularly helps to create youthful, glowing, silky, and smooth skin. 

Ingredients-

  • Granulated brown sugar- 1 cup
  • Olive oil/ almond oil- 1-2 tbsp
  • Vitamin E- 2-3 drops
  • Lemon juice- 1 tbsp

How to use- Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well with the help of a spoon. Massage all over the skin with a soft hand and wash thoroughly with lukewarm or regular water.

NOTE - In some people, even the natural homemade scrubs may result in some type of side effects as per the level of skin sensitiveness. So always do a patch test before continuing any body scrub. For people with oily and sensitive skin, it is suggested to apply their particular and suitable body scrub only once a week. Others with normal skin type can apply twice to thrice a week. Make sure to do a gentle or soft hand massage instead of rough and vigorous massage to avoid any harm to your skin.
